A Room Fit For a Princess

FILED IN: My Girls, My Nest

I have always been a Disney girl. Always. And when I was building our new home, I realized that I had an opportunity to turn Clara’s bedroom into the most magical, sparkly, royal princess room that I could imagine. I really wanted to create something that wasn’t a “typical” princess room with pictures of the princesses in the room, because I wanted CLARA to be the princess.

I researched Pinterest high and low and the best inspo I could find was the inside of Cinderella castle in Walt Disney World. Since I do not have Disney Imagineers at my disposal, it was time to get creative.

I started with the focal point, which was obviously the bed. I found this canopy bed at Horchow and fell in love. It looked exactly how I would imagine a coach bed made from a pumpkin to look. (I used to have a gold glitter pumpkin at the top of the canopy and Swarovski crystal snowflakes hanging from the top (Elsa), but Clara insisted on taking them down a few months ago. I think she is slowly outgrowing this room and it BREAKS MY HEART.) For bedding, I definitely wanted something that looked regal and loved the combination of the French blues, whites, and dusty pinks.

Clara obviously needed storage in her room and I opted for a full sized dresser to act as a nightstand. I love the shape and color of this piece. I added a second dresser in another area of her room that did not “match” the other. In fact, all of her furniture was individual pieces that I found and felt “went together” and felt more like mismatched antiques, instead of a bedroom suite.

Both of my girls are big readers, so I wanted to give Clara a big, comfy chair to sit and read in. My cousin helped me select a chair design that worked in the rest of the room and when we found this scalloped Scalamandre fabric, I knew we HAD to find a way to use it in the room and a chair was perfect. When the chair was being made, I know my cousin included a little secret charm inside so, one day, when Clara is an adult and reupholsters the chair, she will find a little surprise.

The window treatments in this room really were a challenge. I went to several different designers and tried to explain what I wanted and no one could get it quite right. When I explained it to my cousin, she knew exactly what would be “perfect” and sketched the design by hand. It was pure perfection. She then took it to a manufacturer and had the cornice and balloon shades made. The fabrics used were inexpensive and found in a local Pittsburgh fabric shop and there was not much yardage available, but she made it work. I DIE for the ruffle trim on the bottom. It was made from folding over a matching fabric, gathered and a lace trim was added on top. It might be my favorite window treatment in the house.

When we were visiting the fabric shop, they had the most amazing gowns on dress forms scattered about. When I asked about them, I was introduced to a gentleman who made these creations. I explained what I was doing in Clara’s room and asked if he could make a little girls version of the Cinderella dress that the mice created for her. I gave him the color scheme and not much more direction. When I saw the final product, I could have died. LOVE is not strong enough a word. And here is the part that is fascinating: the entire dress is PINNED. It was created with folding and tufting and just pinned to the dress form. It really is a work of art and I love it. When Clara was little, she wanted to wear it SO badly, but it’s not a real dress. It was a very frustrating thing for her.

And last, but certainly not least, is the hand painted murals in the room. I found a local artist on Facebook and explained what I wanted in the room. I wanted all of the princesses friends and sidekicks, because Clara was the princess. She created faux tufting and swags around the room. Roses and vines were added and once she completed all of the paintings, I added crystal rhinestones (listen: I’m a DANCE MOM and have ZERO issues with rhinestoning a room) to make it magical and sparkle. It took her weeks of work, but the finished product is so stunning that when we have guests over, everyone thinks they are wall decals. When they look closely and realize its actual ART, they are usually amazed.

The mice from Cinderella are working along the floor to complete Clara's dress for the royal ball.

Mrs. Potts, Chip, Cogsworth and Lumiere keep watch in the corner.

Flora, Fauna and Merryweather keep Clara safe at night, while she sleeps.

These little critters are friends from Sophia the First, which Clara loved when she was little. And they found Snow White's poison apple.

After Frozen premiered, I actually had to have the artist back to add Olaf to Clara's room. He was an important feature.

Little details were my last addition to the room and really made it feel authentic. I found most of the stuff on ebay, etsy or at HomeGoods. Clara had the magical rose from Beauty & the Beast on her nightstand, but that was another removal of the “grown-up” Clara. Sigh.

Clara's magic mirror. You cannot see in this photo, but the birds from Cinderella are flying above.

A view into another kingdom.

Every princess needs her tiara.

Aladdin's magic lamp sits on Clara's desk.

This glass slipper was found at TJMaxx. When Clara was little, she used to actually squeeze her foot into it.

Clara’s room is definitely one of my favorites and when I tuck her in at night, it sincerely makes me smile. It is the room of my childhood dreams and I am so happy that my little princess gets to grow up in a castle.

As always, thank you for reading and sharing!

XO, Christi

I think the best part for me is the artwork, it’s out of this world! I don’t know the story, but l have no doubt that the artwork tells it. Hi Kacey, Right now Clara is obsessed with the idea of a “galaxy” room. Um, I am not ready to part with the castle room, so I may let her turn our sleepover room into a galaxy. We shall see. Eventually, I am going to allow her to redo the room, just not YET. lol. XO, Christi

    Hi from Australia!

Just saw your live and have really been enjoying reading your blog, I’m so happy it’s finally up!

I would love to see you do a blog post on how you decorate/styling tips.I love pretty things but I am terrible and have a hard time at putting them together – it’s a mess and has stopped me from trying to redecorate my room.

That said, I ADORE Clara’s room. It is almost what kind of room I dreamed of having when I was little. It’s so beautiful and the artwork is so detailed and gorgeous! I hope she never decides to paint over the art or I will probably cry as well 😂

wow This is stunning! I LOVED decorating my kids bedrooms. I’m a twin so my sister and I always got stuck in the same bedroom. We look identical but our tastes are completely different so to squash potential arguments we were never able to decorate our bedrooms. Now it’s become a passion of mine to create a space for my kids that inspires them and feels like their own special retreat. I’m obsessed with this decor and might need to nab an idea or two for my little princess’s bedroom!😂

Hey! I actually just finished watching all the Dance Moms episodes, season for season. I just wanted to say “thank you” for being you, sticking up for your kids, and loving them for who they are! I coach competitive soccer and it’s amazing that lengths parents will go to to try and get their child ahead, even though their child doesn’t want to participate. I think we have lost sight of the true experiences that youth activities can bring and the life lessons that they can learn all for a
    1st place trophy.

Thank you for being an example of hard work,
dedication, and mostly pure love and acceptance for your daughter!
