Girl’s Night In – Movie Edition

Sometimes a girl just needs a night in, ammiright?  I love to break out a bottle of rose, invite my besties over and turn on a classic rom com. There are so many great ones to choose from, but these ones hold a special place in my too-small heart.  This list is in no particular order, because it would definitely change depending on my mood.

My Chick Flicks Hit List

Pretty Woman

Glamorizing prostitution may not fly in today’s current social climate, but let’s look past that and just enjoy Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in this modern classic. Does anyone wear a gray suit QUITE as well as Edward Lewis? (A fair argument could be made for Danny Ocean, but that’s an entirely different blog post) And who doesn’t sometimes dream of the perfect boyfriend spending an obscene amount of money on a Rodeo Drive shopping spree? And let’s not forget the amazing date on the private jet with the red dress and the diamond necklace. I’m swooning just thinking about it. But nothing will ever compare to the final scene when you hear the opera music start as Edward turns onto Princess Vivian’s street. Sigh.  It’s the best.

Sleepless in Seattle

To me, this will always be a Christmas movie, which is super weird because the movie’s pivotal scene takes place during Valentine’s Day. Maybe it’s because I will forever have the line “And, up next: Jingle Bells…BACKWARDS!” engrained in my brain? However you want to classify it, it’s still an opportunity to fall in love with the chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. You spend the entire movie JUST KNOWING they are perfect for each other…if only they would meet. And when they finally do, it’s just MAGIC.

Sixteen Candles

Two Words: Jake Ryan. Has there ever been a more iconic high school dream guy? He has withstood the test of time and the final scene will forever live in infamy as THE BEST scene in an 80’s high school movie. Period. (And this is where all the Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink fans are gonna come @me. Stop. Jake Ryan. Church. Red Porsche. I win. )

Never Been Kissed

I spent about a decade of my life feeling like a Josie Grossie and Drew Barrymore makes me relive every single minute of that most awkward time. But, it somehow feels okay because she gets a crack at a high school do-over and comes to terms with her insecurities. And she ends up with her dream guy. I think it’s what Barrymore does best: relatable and endearing and I am so here for it.

Crazy Rich Asians

This is obviously the newest movie to make the cut, but I think it totally deserves a spot. I read the book years ago, but the movie made me fall deeper in love with the characters than I could have ever thought. I love that Nick’s mother wasn’t a “villain”, but instead just a protective mother (okay, maybe slightly villainous). I love that Rachel drove the narrative of her relationship with Nick and didn’t wait for a guy to make the decision. Yasss for #girlpower. But, not gonna lie, I have seen the movie maybe five or six times and the airplane scene makes me cry.  Every. Single. Time.

Sweet Home Alabama

I have to admit, this one has grown on me over the years. I liked it when I first saw it, but I didn’t LOVE it. I think because this was the first Reese Witherspoon movie I saw after Legally Blonde and Elle Woods was just THAT good. But, in true Melanie Smooter fashion, it has worked its way into my heart and now it’s totally on my favs list. Maybe it’s Jake? Maybe it’s the perfect bird cage veil she wears at her southern wedding? Is it the baby in the bar? Not entirely sure, but I know when I see it playing on a random weekend, I’m there!

Crazy, Stupid Love

The first time I saw this movie, I was in love. I love, love, loved the way each of the individual stories weaved together and painted a bigger picture. I had no idea that this was the genius and hallmark of Dan Fogelman, who would go on to use the same type of storytelling in This Is Us, I just knew that I liked it. I also knew that I liked Ryan Gosling in a suit. But the scene that stole my heart (and everyone else’s) was the Dirty Dancing scene in the rain. Emma Stone had me at “Seriously???? It’s like you’re Photoshopped.” Smart, quirky girls everywhere just realized that they COULD get the hot guy and I was sold.

One of my absolute favorites is You’ve Got Mail with Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan. Years after Sleepless in Seattle their on-screen chemistry still just works effortlessly. I could watch that movie over & over again, it never gets old. I also am still a fan of The Notebook, another one I will never get tired of watching. For a classic rom com I always enjoyed Houseboat with Cary Grant & Sophia Loren- it’s great!

I love You’ve Got Mail, Sarah! I was hesitant to include two Tom and meg movies on the same list. Funny story: when Clara watched it, she was SO confused about the dial up internet service. Kids these days….Xo, Christi
