The Truth About My Engagement Ring Story

FILED IN: Pretty For Real

Marc and I got engaged on Christmas Eve 1998. I remember thinking that my engagement ring was the most beautiful ring in the world. It was a simple 1-carat Princess-cut solitaire, set in gold. I loved everything about that ring and what it represented, and I never took it off. Fast forward two years later, a pregnancy and an extra 20-pounds that I could never get rid of and all of a sudden, that size 6 ring felt more like a tourniquet. I could barely get it on my finger and, if I did, I would pray that I wouldn't need a stick of butter to remove it. I kept telling myself that I didn't need to resize it, that I would just lose the weight, but I never did. So I became used to only wearing a wedding band, and I didn't even always wear that. It has nothing to do with not wanting to appear married, but rather because I am SUPER absent-minded and I would take my ring off and put it in a purse or pocket and lose it for weeks. UGH, right?

It never seemed like a huge deal not to wear rings. I'm not trolling bars or looking to pick up men, so it never felt like an issue to me. And then Dance Moms started airing. All of a sudden, I was getting questions continuously about why didn't I wear a wedding ring. Was I separated? What was the deal with Marc? It was such an odd thing to think that people were so concerned about the state of my left-hand jewelry. I think I answered that question more often than any other, so I started to wear my ring again.

And then on the 15th anniversary of our engagement, Marc surprised me with a new ring set. Perhaps he was tired of me bitching that I no longer liked gold jewelry? Maybe he wanted to give me a reason to wear my rings consistently? Whatever the reason, I'll take it.

I then decided that I felt guilty for not wearing my original ring and was cheating on it, so I decided the perfect solution would be to reset it and wear it as a right-hand ring – thus, this engagement ring story. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted, but I knew that I did not want that ring to look like an engagement ring. I wanted it to be more of a statement and a little “fun.” I searched high and low for inspo and finally found something I KINDA liked, but it wasn't exactly “right.”

So, armed with my inspiration photo and my old ring, I went to XIV Karats in Beverly Hills and talked to their jeweler. He seemed to get what I wanted, and I left my original ring there for about a week. I went back for a fitting for the new design, while I liked where it was going, it was difficult to envision the final piece.

About another week went by, and I went and picked up the final ring. I saw it and was in LOVE. It was exactly what I wanted: it didn't look like an engagement ring on my right hand, and it featured the diamond the had meant so much to me. Whenever I wear this ring, I get TONS of compliments everywhere I go. It's perfect, and I am happy that I made the decision to reset the stone, instead of just having it sit in my jewelry box. And, of course, my girls have called dibs on who gets which ring after I die (thanks, ladies) and I'm thrilled to have one to give to each of them – along with all the other keepsakes, like those from their bedrooms.

So, that's it from me today. Thank you so much for reading AND sharing!

XO, Christi

It’s a beautiful ring and what a lovely thing to do rather than have it hidden away in your jewellery box! It’s super that you also have one for each of the girls ❤️ Thankyou for sharing with us all xx

My engagement ring was too small and I had to have it cut off at the emergency room Christmas Day! I wish I would have only needed a stick of butter to get it off! 😂

A sweet story none the less, and I never noticed you weren’t wearing a ring.

It’s a beautiful ring… I’m glad Marc was understanding to the fact that you knew what you wanted and took time with the fact that a ring while it’s being given to show the symbol of togetherness.. as females we should also have the bond with our ring… I didn’t really like my ring either.. while mine was a beautiful ring and I appreciate the time and effort he put in it.. I just wanted a band… plain and simple nothing to it other than the date we got married.. so I didn’t wear it.. unless my husband and I were going out.. not that I didn’t like it… it just felt annoying being on my finger..
I think I should redo mine… sweet idea..

I love this story. My mom has my dad’s grandma’s engagement ring bc he was working to save money for her ring and he got really sick and had to stop working so his grandma took her ring off her finger and told him to propose with it.

Christi, that is such a beautiful ring . Such a good idea rather than leaving it in your jewelry box.

My Nanny (grandma) left me her engagement ring which I love as its very unique its either gold and gold with simple diamonds in it. And it’s 60 years old so for that time very unique . I don’t take it off me unless it’s to be cleaned .

Also your new set of rings are beautiful and how lovely of Marc .

Don’t understand why people felt it their business on if you wore your rings or not . Some ppl have to much time.

    Loving the blog. Michelle xoxo

I love that ring. People who watch TV shows, movies etc. Forget that the stars have lives outside of their acting job. They pry into personal affairs like little squirrels. But I’m really happy you got the ring you wanted, it is a lovely ring after all and you deserve it.

Such beautiful rings Christi! You and Marc are so lucky to have each other and two amazing girls! In all honesty it doesn’t have anything to do with the public about why you didn’t have your rings on while on Dance Moms… you rock! One of my inspirations! You have helped me control my depression and anxiety without even knowing it… so big thank you! Can’t wait to see more on your blog… ❤️

It is a really beautiful ring. You do not owe anyone an excuse as to why you did not wear the ring. That is between you and your husband although I must admit I was a little curious. Your beauty is what makes the ring so gorgeous.

Fabulous idea and it’s really beautiful! I really love the new set too! Marc must be a sweetie. When you were on DMS, it would never occur to me to ask. None of my business. I love rings, but l also know how bad it sucks when you gain or lose weight. I love your blog, thanks for including us in a corner of your life! ❤
